Ramadan Suhoor Banana Date Smoothie Recipe
This luscious, filling smoothie combines the natural sweetness of Ajwa dates with creamy banana, creating a satisfying texture that's both nourishing and absolutely delicious. The protein powder keeps you full whilst the healthy fats from peanut butter provide lasting energy throughout your fast.
Ingredients
- 6 Ajwa dates, pitted and roughly chopped (about 50g, these provide spiritual significance and slow-release energy with their deep caramel flavour)
- 1 medium ripe banana, peeled and broken into chunks (about 120g, choose one with brown speckles for maximum sweetness and creaminess)
- 250ml unsweetened almond milk, chilled (or any plant-based milk you prefer)
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter, smooth or crunchy (about 15g, look for varieties with no added sugar)
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder (about 8g, or unsweetened cocoa powder if unavailable)
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (about 30g, choose your favourite plant-based or whey variety)
- 3-4 ice cubes (optional, for extra thickness and chill)
- Pinch of ground cinnamon (optional, for warmth and natural sweetness enhancement)
Directions
Step 1
Prepare your dates by pitting them if they're not already pitted, then roughly chop them into smaller pieces. This is crucial because it helps them blend more smoothly and ensures they distribute evenly throughout your smoothie rather than clumping together. If your dates are quite firm or have been stored in the fridge, let them sit at room temperature for 5 minutes or run them under warm water briefly to soften them up. Pop all your chopped dates into your blender jug first, as they'll benefit from being at the bottom where the blades work most efficiently.
Step 2
Add your banana chunks directly on top of the dates, followed by the peanut butter. Breaking the banana into smaller pieces rather than adding it whole helps your blender work more efficiently and creates a smoother texture. The peanut butter adds healthy fats that'll keep you feeling satisfied for hours, and it pairs beautifully with the banana and dates. Don't be shy with the peanut butter – that tablespoon is essential for the creamy, indulgent texture and sustained energy release.
Step 3
Sprinkle the cacao powder and your scoop of protein powder over the banana mixture. Adding these dry ingredients now, before the liquid, prevents them from sticking to the sides of your blender and ensures everything gets properly incorporated. The cacao provides antioxidants and that gorgeous chocolate flavour, whilst the protein powder is absolutely key for keeping you full and supporting your muscles during the fast. If you're using the optional cinnamon, add it now as well.
Step 4
Pour in your chilled almond milk, making sure it covers all the ingredients. The cold milk helps create that refreshing, smooth consistency you're after. If you want an extra thick, frosty texture that's almost like a milkshake, add your ice cubes now. The ice isn't essential, but it does make the smoothie more substantial and satisfying, especially if you're drinking this in warmer weather or prefer your drinks really cold.
Step 5
Secure your blender lid firmly and start blending on low speed for about 10 seconds to break down the larger pieces, then increase to high speed and blend for 45-60 seconds until completely smooth and creamy. You'll know it's ready when there are no visible date pieces and the mixture has a uniform, velvety colour throughout. If your blender is struggling or you notice chunks remaining, stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula, then blend for another 20-30 seconds. The mixture should have the consistency of thick double cream that pours slowly and smoothly.
Step 6
Check the consistency by giving your blender a gentle shake – the smoothie should move slowly and coat the sides of the jug beautifully. If it's too thick to pour easily, add another 2-3 tablespoons of almond milk and pulse briefly to incorporate. If it's thinner than you'd like, add another ice cube or two and blend again for 15 seconds. This is where you can customise it perfectly to your preference – some people love it thick enough to eat with a spoon, whilst others prefer it pourable.
Step 7
Pour your smoothie into a tall glass, taking a moment to appreciate that gorgeous chocolate colour and creamy texture. The smoothie should pour slowly and smoothly, holding its body rather than running thin. If you fancy making it a bit special for suhoor, you can dust the top with a tiny pinch of extra cacao powder or add a halved date on the rim of the glass. This isn't just about looks – it's about making your pre-dawn meal feel nourishing and intentional.
Step 8
Drink your smoothie immediately whilst it's at its freshest and coldest, ideally sitting down calmly rather than rushing. The combination of dates, banana, and protein means this will digest slowly and steadily, releasing energy throughout your fast. Sip it mindfully, allowing each mouthful to satisfy you properly. If you do need to prepare it slightly ahead, you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 hours, but give it a good stir before drinking as some separation is natural. The flavours actually develop beautifully as it sits, with the dates becoming even more prominent.
